Cube Runner is a 3d running game app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It was created by Andy Qua and is free. This app lets you move forward quickly dodging blocks trying to get as far as possible. This is something that is not difficult to find in the iTunes app store and this does it very well..
I’ve done just enough programming to know that three dimensionality is far harder than two. There are a lot of reasons for this, one of the major is perspective. If you have a cube that is going to come nearer to you it needs to get bigger as you approach it. This means that instead of having a single image to animate on a 2’d you need to do one for every distance or write a way to increase it. Beyond that true 3’d means you need to be able to see things from different angels as well, all this means that when I see a game that does this it impresses me. Cube Runner isn’t a perfect game but it does a good job with this.
When you open this app you will begin by choosing the level of difficulty. There are three levels but you can also add more if you have a url to one. Once you begin you have two triangles and run through an area of blocks there are paths that you can go through or more random sections. You simply try to go forward as long as possible.
The graphics and sound of this app are pretty basic for the iPhone. You can listen to your own music while using this app.
The controls of this app are pretty good as you simply tilt the iPhone to move and while his is not all that precise it works very well and it is quite a lot of fun.
The greatest weakness of this app is that after playing it once or twice it becomes a bit flat. There just isn’t all that much to do here and it could use some type of power up, power down or other choices.
This app gets three out of five stars because it is well done but it is also not that much to it and the truth is that it probably isn’t going to be a game that you will play more than a few times before you delete it.
