There is very little excuse in the modern environment for any major company to not use the iPhone and other app programs to add value to their product when it is easy to do so and yet there are many which do not do this leaving it to customers to make versions or simply not having them at all. DirecTV is not one of those companies though and for the iPod and iPhone they have created a very useful, free, app for anyone who has a DirecTV or even those who are considering getting it.
When you start up the DirecTV app you are given the option of signing in, giving you access to your own programming and DVR or to sign in as a guest so that you can look through the programming available in your area. This guest option is great if you have some interest in joining DirecTV because it in essence gives you the same information you would have if you were browsing their channel listings on your TV.
The real value is in being able to control your DVR, though. With this program you can search what is on the TV by time, show or channel and once you find a program it will give you all the information you would have on your TV such as episode description, program ratings, as well as pictures and the option to record a single episode or the entire series.
This is not a program that is overly developed and I would love to have a few more options available such as a list of every episode of a program that is playing or similar things I might enjoy but if you are out a lot and still like to be able to set your DVR to record something you are not likely to find any better programs for DirecTV and most of the extras are just that extras.
There is simply no good reason for anyone who has a DirecTV and a iPod Touch or an iPhone to not have this application on your device. It is free and if all you ever do is set one program to record when you would have otherwise missed it the program will be more than worth the small amount of space that it takes on your iPod and I suspect that once most people have used it once they are going to discover that they like being able to change things without being home.
